Scanning without Odoo Enterprise

Rx Tracking (DSCSA) - Barcode lets Odoo Enterprise's Barcode app record DSCSA serials. On Odoo Community there is no Barcode app, but every scan the app records can be made on the transfer forms with Scan Serials and a handheld scanner. The units, checks, messages and records are the same, because both paths write the same package ledger. Abbreviations: SSCC: Serial Shipping Container Code (see the glossary).

Requires: Rx Tracking (DSCSA). Works in Odoo Community (and in Enterprise, without the Barcode app).

Scanning without Odoo Enterprise​

A Community database can't install the Barcode add-on: Inventory ‣ Configuration ‣ Settings shows Barcode Scanner with an Enterprise badge, Apps shows Odoo's Barcode app with Upgrade, and activating Rx Tracking (DSCSA) - Barcode fails with an Invalid Operation dialog. Open the transfer in Inventory, select Scan Serials, scan the units into the Scan DSCSA Serials dialog (one scan per line) and select Register. The units appear on the transfer's DSCSA Packages tab.

The same rules apply on both paths: one scanned serial per unit before Validate, the same refusals for a unit that is quarantined, already shipped or held for another owner, and the same messages. The Community path also shows everything the Barcode app leaves out: the Import EPCIS button, the missing Transaction Statement banner, the DSCSA Packages tab and the smart buttons of the transfer (What the Barcode app leaves to standard Odoo). The known issues of the Barcode app pages (line counts, counting unit by unit, sealed-case labels, scrapping) belong to the app and don't arise on this path; the Community pages carry their own.

Your scanner​

A 2D scanner in keyboard mode (a keyboard-wedge scanner) works with Scan Serials: it types each DataMatrix into the dialog's scan box, followed by Enter. Set how it sends the GS1 separator: the control character (ASCII 29), or <GS>, {GS}, [GS], \x1d or ␝. The dialog doesn't read # or Alt029, which a scanner set up for Odoo's Barcode app may use (Known issue PF-A02-06). See Set up a handheld scanner for Scan Serials.

What you don't get without it​

  • No scanning screen of its own: you work in the transfer's form, and scan into a dialog that you open for each transfer and confirm with Register. Products, lots, locations and packages are chosen on the form, not by scanning them.
  • Scans are collected in the dialog and checked together when you select Register; the app checks each scan as you make it.
  • Counts are entered in Inventory ‣ Operations ‣ Physical Inventory, not counted by scanning, and the serials of the units gone or found are scanned into the DSCSA Serials dialog when the count is applied.

Everything that makes a unit part of the DSCSA record (the package, its state, the checks at validation, the documents) is the same.
